Why you need CPD courses?
Accredited courses: structured and resulting in a recognised certification which can lead to progression (promotion, better income and more opportunities for employment), but you need to invest and have commitment
Webinar: immediately useful for addressing a need; but often no nationally-recognised certification
Conference/Event: good if you have the opportunity to present; but it is often a one-time event of participation with no certification
In-school CPD: great in terms of meeting immediate needs of school as a whole; but not always fit for individual teacher’s needs
Distance learning: very flexible and often self-directed with certification; but, no face-to-face interaction which sometimes means lack of contextualization. Some types of CPD may come in compound forms, and also blend different modes of delivery.
Whatever the type, shape or form of CPD, it needs coaching and expert support. A CPD should provide platform for reflection and tools for reflexive development.
To paraphrase Confucius: "Learning is reflecting on what we do."
Growth-mindset: Demonstrates self-awareness, and indicates a drive for self-improvement, especially where you initiate it yourself. It demonstrates your capacity for self-evaluation and your disposition for continuous learning.
Expertise: Allows you to expand cultural and technical currency, in the continuous development of knowledge, understanding and skills in the field
Confidence: Expands your range of strategies and repertoire of techniques and methods for the practice
Quality: Equips you to provide best quality education, putting you in a better position to understand and achieve the mission of the school
Service: Makes you more committed and willing to create more opportunities to improve students’ learning experiences and, ultimately, the achievement of goals; with improved skills, can also quickly identify opportunities to support others, enhancing the level of collaboration in the school
Personal qualities/Soft Skills: Develops more empathy through increased interaction with other professionals and experts in the field, listening to diverse groups of people, learning to value feedback, exposing ideas to challenge and critical evaluation by peers
CPD’s make you relevant. You are genuinely evolving, instead of being static.
