The child, in order to connect learning so that it is meaningful
Other teachers, in order to understand the child’s school experience
The home and the parents/guardians, in order to support the child effectively
Put students’ wellbeing and interest first; make it a non-negotiable for all that you do
Get involved in as much extra curricular activities as you can
Make time to listen, and promote students’ voice
Connect learning topics with experiences, activities, interests and aspirations of students
Engage parents/guardians with regular phone calls and invitations for progress reviews
Remember you are not only modelling in the lesson; you are also a model of the world the child experiences in order to become who/what they want to become.
Be patient and transparent with the students – be honest and recognize their strengths, even where you fall short
Give second chances and opportunities for the students to address their mistakes – both pastorally and academically
Continue to learn, reflect on the impact of your teaching, and evaluate the school experience of the students
Change and adapt the learning material and the delivery methods to suit the student – differentiating and scaffolding, like a participant in the learning experiences that you create
To be a great teacher, you need to become one of the child’s trusted learning guides and life coaches.
